I have always been an entrepreneur at heart. There are always new concepts and ideas that I believe might change the world. Many are dreams and wishful thoughts at best but I believe that it is healthy to have your mind racing for at least something.
I have chased 2 of my dreams in the past. TLDR; they both failed.
My first dream was to provide free website hosting for the everyone. This was an idea that I had back in the long past when I was in high school when a variety of free email services were available and popular. My thoughts were to mimic the business model of these free email services. Gee, thinking on this now, this was probably the most ridiculous thought that I ever had.
Little did I know what the consequences of providing free services meant. Constant abuse of systems, lack of trust from potential customers due to it being free, and not able to justify maintaining expensive software licenses. Enough to say my desire to maintain the system died out after a couple of years and this free service has never come to its full form.
My second dream was to provide a cloud platform as a service (PaaS) similar to DigitalOcean and Linode. The idea was to provide rapid deployment services of Virtual Machines (VM) to developers using pre-built images installed with popular development frameworks, languages and tools. I even developed a half functioning portal! Might I say I thought it was the great s*** I ever made.
But this time, the business side of the house caught up with me and I found myself having trouble with marketing, finances, legal and overall management. I was scared and flustered on the management of the business and an obstacle that I had trouble climbing to continue maintaining the service.
I chased 2 of my dreams and they both failed. But they failed for valid reasons and I have taken away a tremendous amount of knowledge from my failures. You simply cannot know everything at any point in your life. Some things you will just learn as you go and this is completely fine. If you can’t learn then find an expert and delegate and work together on the idea and vision.
As Vince Lombardi said: “The greatest accomplishment is not in never falling, but in rising again after you fall.”
Keep trying, keep hustling and keep giving it your best.
